What did they make masquerade masks out of in the English renaissance?

I'm wanting to make my own ';authentic'; renaissance animal mask (wolf if you must know) and I was wondering what they made them out of back then.

And if the material isn't around anymore, what materials are similar. I don't want to use papermache because it'll be too heavy. %26gt;.%26lt;

So... Any help would be appreciated.

Lots of love!What did they make masquerade masks out of in the English renaissance?
Sorry - paper mache was the material used. It was applied in a thin layer to a wooden frame.
