My cob seems to be plagued by flys rounds his eyes, i spray/slather him in no end of lotions and potions but nothing seems to offer him the protection he needs. I have just bought a roma lycra fly mask for my dads Section D by it is't big enough for my horse (the biggest size they offer) and he hates it because you have to pull i over his nose to put on. I just wondered what masks you have used and what you rate them, oh i have already tried a velcrow one...... he ditched it!! : (What fly masks stop on the best and offer the best protection for a horse on summer turnout?
try the farnam or the horse sense fly masks. the horse sense ones have velcro but there are 2 straps. they have 3 different styles to choose from hopefully one will work for you. you can cover his face with all the wipe on fly repellent you can buy but you cant get that close to their eyes with that stuff so your best bet is to keep searching for the style you can find that he will keep on! try arab/yearling size if you go with the horse sense brand there horse size runs really big! i own a saddle and tack store in norco,ca and carry the horse sense i also carry a no name brand style with the fllece lining around the nose and ears and personally use those on my daughters ponys and they will pull them off each other but they fit and they hold up, you just gotta go put them back on if they get them off! oh and the velcro is a good idea for safety reasons if they get caught on something you want that mask to go instead of keeping them hung up ya know! if you have any questions you can contact me via e-mail or call all tacked up @ 951-272-1243 ask for andreaWhat fly masks stop on the best and offer the best protection for a horse on summer turnout?
I use nothing but farnam flymasks! Anything else either rubs there face, rub them right off there heads, or don't protect there eyes enough from the sun which is needed if you have a horse with a ulcer or whatever.
Use a high end fly spray like Endure, Happy Horse or Repel X! All can be applied to a rag also and wipe around the eys..... Stay away from Bronco, waste of money.
We've used the Farnam with the velcro. It stays on best with a halter over it, so the halter needs a breakaway crown or buckle to be safe. None of my horses have tried to ditch this, from feisty colts through oldsters.
My horse hates them too. He rips them and takes them off all the time. I finally had to give up after 10 different kinds of fly masks in 2 years. The one that lasted the longest was this cool one that came in a green box and was made with special material so that it was rip proof and super see through. That made it almost a month. I just don't know if a fly mask is the best thing for every horse. Now I just use the ';endure'; fly spray roll on all over his face and the bugs don't seem to bother him too much. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
