What is the point of the scene in batman begins where they break the defective masks?

Usually in movies when they take a scene to point out a minor detail, it becomes important late in the movie. In batman begins they show Alfred breaking batman's mask to show that they are fragile due to a problem with the graphite, but this never seems to come up again. Any idea what the scene is for?What is the point of the scene in batman begins where they break the defective masks?
Meh I would have to just say it was a humorous scene in the montage of the whole costume making process. Before they talked about how they had to order in bulk to alleviate suspicion, this time around bruce jokes that now they will get a discount.
