What does the v for vendetta masks protest for?

i have seen them at protests but what does it really stand for. i have seen the movie but i dont really get it. can any1 explain?What does the v for vendetta masks protest for?
Guy Fawkes, on the 5th of November, who attempted to destroy Parlaiment using fertilizer as an explosive.

This is hinted at the very beginning of the movie, ';Remember, remember, the 5th of November, the gun-powder, treason, and plot.';..

I have read the graphic novel, you should pick it up.

From Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com ';V for Vendetta'; by Alan Moore, the author who wrote the story.

The protestors that wear the mask should stand for Vs rebellion against oppression. V himself from the graphic novel stood for Anarchy.

';Let us destroy. From the ashes, we will rebuild';

Something like that..What does the v for vendetta masks protest for?
they are used by a group that began online known only as 'anonymous', and they protest the church of scientology

originally though it was supposed to represent guy falkes, a real person who protested the british gouvernment and tried to blow up parliament
